The sorghum production in the region of the Extreme - North of Cameroon, one of the most important areas of production of this product, peaked at 411 499 tonnes in 2014, according to statistics from the regional delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and rural development.
Although with a significant increase, emphasized local officials, this production could have been greater had it not been for the Boko Haram threat which led some farmers to abandon their fields due to attacks of the Nigerian terrorist sect in this part of Cameroon which has completed the 2014 crop year with a deficit estimated at 32 000 tons.
This year, the production of sorghum, one of the most consumed foods in the Cameroonian septentrion project is expected to have an upturn.
Funded at 50 billion Cfa francs by the World Bank, the PIDMA, which consists of financial support to producers, aims to boost the production of maize, cassava and sorghum, to supply agro-industries such as Nestlé or Guinness.
Through this program, the regional Council of peasant organizations of the northern part of Cameroon (CROPSEC), which aims to build two units of de-hulling of sorghum in the context of the PIDMA, should be able to increase its deliveries of sorghum to Guinness Cameroon, currently estimated at 30,000 tons each year.
