Garoua
Garoua is a port city and the capital of the Northern Region of Cameroon which lies on the Benue River. It is the center of trade for the surrounding agricultural region and also houses several textile processing facilities. The city has 235,996 inhabitants according to the 2005 Census, making it the third most populated city in Cameroon after of Douala and Yaoundé.
Garoua is an oasis and therefore contributes to tourism in that regard. Waza National Park and the Kapsiki region lie north of Garoua, while Benue National Park, the Bouba Njida National Park, and the Faro Reserve are to the south of Garoua. The city is the birthplace of the first President of Cameroon Ahmadou Ahidjo. Because of this, it has benefited from many developments, including an international airport with direct flights to Paris via Cameroon Airlines. The government established an urban community in Garoua on 17th January, 2008.
In Garoua , the wheather can be hot in the late dry season despite the shade provided by the trees that line the main streets of the city. Averagely, the temperature records 26 ° C in August to 40 ° C in March. Extremities with temperatures have been recorded to be 17 ° C and 40 ° C.
The fruit research in Central Africa, have 7 varieties of mango trees , 144 citrus varieties and rootstocks, seven varieties of guava , 7 varieties of palm trees , two varieties of cashew which covers a large area of land.
The Development Corporation of Cotton Cameroon (SODECOTON) has a general direction to Garoua. Many cotton cultivation and the production of cotton gins in the area was supported by the French Cooperation (CCCE via Central Fund for Economic Cooperation and Public Dagris ) and the European Development Fund of the European Union and the Spinning and weaving Industrial Cotton from Cameroon (CICAM). Garoua has an international airport built in 1980. It has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo per year.
