Non-biodegradable plastic packaging seized

More than 200 tons of non-biodegradable plastic packaging has already been seized in Cameroon in just two months, according to the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Sustainable Development.

Since the ban on non-biodegradable plastic packaging of less than or equal to 60 microns, 215.39 tonnes of non-compliant packages were seized and 137 cases of infringement have been established over the entire territory of Cameroon.

During the evaluation meeting last Wednesday, the Cameroonian Minister of Environment, Nature Conservation and Sustainable Development, Hele Pierre, said that 145 tons were seized in the Littoral region and 52 tonnes in Central Region.

“Overall, this is a satisfactory job because for an annual production of 600,000 tons, plastics concerned represent only 30 per cent. But we continue to deplore renewed plastics on the market,” he added.

According to the Minister, to address the proliferation of non-compliant packages which are contraband and to make the ban more effective, more efforts should be made at national borders and customs.

It is also prosecutes against domestic manufacturers of plastic packaging that have developed occult distribution strategies for the stocks they produce and hide in inaccessible locations.

In addition, the Minister will take steps to ensure that these packages are perforated and provided to licensed companies for recycling.

"We have taken steps to move forward and confuse those who think they will get tired and let it go. We will go through.

This is an action that is part of life,” the Minister concluded.
