Fisherman from the South-West generated 263 billion FCFA in total revenue in 2014 with the sale of 162,923 tonnes of fish caught in that part of Cameroon.
The activity is dominated by strangers, most of whom are of Ghanaian (914 fishermen registered) and Nigerian nationals (2,721 fishermen).
Each year, Cameroon imports around 100 billion FCFA from fish in order to meet domestic demand.
Fishing proved to be the most lucrative source of revenue for residents in Cameroon’s South-West region which accounts for 70% of the country’s 400 km of coast line.
