Over 2,500 rice producers ready to cultivate rice in the East

The development project of rain-fed rice cultivation in forest zone (Proderip) has trained more than 2,500 producers in the region of the East of Cameroon.

This was made known during a symbolic tasting session of upland rice produced in the city of Batouri November 20, 2014, in the presence of Omemoto Shinji, the resident representative of the Japanese cooperation agency (Jica), which supports the Government of Cameroon in the popularization of upland rice.

Now better equipped in techniques for the production of this variety of rice cultivated in non-irrigated areas, these farmers trained by the Proderip receive rice seeds, produced from the 5 hectares of fields seed planted under this project. "Each producer receives 5 kg of rice seed," said Hermann Biscene Ngon of Proderip.

After the regions of the far North, Northwest and West, natural pools of production of this commodity, the parched region's tastes now the delights of rice production, thanks to the Proderip.

With a budget of 1.5 billion Cfa francs, Proderip aims, in the context of the popularization of upland rice, to train 9000 producers and be able to increase Cameroonian rice production to approximately 700,000 tonnes by 2020, against 100,000 tonnes currently.
