An extraordinary session of the Cabinet of the Commission of the Lake Chad Basin (LCBC) will be held on Friday in Yaoundé.

The main item on the agenda is the examination of the advocacy document to be submitted to Heads of zone members, invited to the United Nations Conference of country State on Climate Change (COP21), which opens in late November in Paris (France), APA was informed by official sources.

Entitled "Plan of development and climate change adaptation Lake Chad" strategy, whose total cost is estimated at some FCFA 585 billion over the period 2016-2025, is developed with support from the World Bank.

According to experts of the LCBC, they met in Yaounde on Monday ahead of the cabinet meeting and discussed the redo of Lake Chad zone agro-economic activities and may sustainably contribute to food security of the area.

In August, the Head of State of Cameroon, Paul Biya, signed a decree on ratification of a loan agreement amounting to FCFA 9.44 billion with the African Development Fund (FAD), for the partial financing of the program of rehabilitation and strengthening the resilience of social-ecological systems of the Lake Chad Basin (PRESIBALT).

Executable over 5 years, stated the project, is the preservation and development of water resources, development of ecological services and value chains as well as institutional strengthening and program management.

It is designed to directly benefit the 15.3 million inhabitants of the area of influence around Lake Chad, including 52% women by improving their income, food security and access to basic social infrastructure.

Because of the phenomenon of climate change, this water body, with an area of 22,000 square kilometers in 1960, will consider more than about 10,000 today.
