Increase in electricity tariffs under debate

Prime Minister Philemon Yang, presided over an inter-ministerial meeting on the approval of tariffs for electricity on Thursday, reavealed APA's official source.

The meeting, according to the source, was called as a result of multiplied pressure from the electricity operator to increase tariffs despite heightened blackouts throughout the country.

A subsidiary of the British investment fund, Actis, Eneo relies on other avenues to finance its investment programme which stands at 3700 billion CFA FRANCS over 10 years, with 2500 billion CFA FRANCS for production.

The approach of the operator, we learn, comes in the wake of a statement by the Director-general of the electricity sector regulatory agency (ARSEL), Jean pierre Kedi, who in the state's daily journal, Cameroon Tribune, said that the penalties imposed on Eneo, over 4 billion because of the poor quality of service in recent months, automatically neutralizes a possible increase in electricity rates.

It will be recalled that the last increase of such rates occurred June 1, 2012 in the country.
