Govt to donate 900 tonnes of certified maize to farmers

Government intends to finance the production and distribution of 900 tonnes of certified maize to producers during the year 2015, the Minister of Economy Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi announced in an official statement.

With annual imports which peak at 20,000 tonnes (due to the deficit of the national production), maize which is the third most consumed food in Cameroon after plantain and cassava, according the competitiveness Committee, is for several years now, the object of focus on the part of the Cameroonian authorities.

In addition to a corn program housed at the Department of Agriculture, whose ambition is to boost the production of this cereal through funding to producers, Government has launched the project of investment and development of agricultural markets (PIDMA), with a budget of 50 billion Cfa francs, to produce more cassava, maize and sorghum products to supply the agri-food companies in the country.
