GICAM sollicits National Assembly to improve business climate

As part of efforts to grow the economy faster by mobilising both the private and public sectors, the President of the Business Employers’ Association of Cameroon, GICAM, yesterday, November 20, 2014, in Yaounde, met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril.

Speaking to the media after, André Fotso said the objective was to achieve two-digit economic growth by 2020, adding that the courtesy call enabled them to review the content of the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, which was later signed yesterday at the National Assembly between the two sides.

He described the agreement as a milestone in the annals of the two institutions, explaining that the economy is not doing so well; reason why they thought it wise to also get the National Assembly mobilised.

Founded in 1957, GICAM represents and defends the interests of businesses as well as promotes free enterprise and a better economic environment. It counts a membership of close to 250, including businesses, associations and trade unions. It is said to contribute about 68 per cent to Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

Members are involved in areas of the economy such as agric-industry, transport, freight forwarding, tourism, textile and tannery, telecommunication, paper and plastics and logging. Others are food industry, water and energy, trade and retail, cement and metallurgy, building and public works, beverages, banking and insurance.
