French firm to set up gas-liquefaction unit in CMR

The French Company Perenco, the leading oil producer in Cameroon through its local subsidiary has been chosen for the setting up of a floating gas-liquefaction unit off the coast of the resort town of Kribi, in the south of the country.

This choice was made after the approval by the Societe nationale des hydrocarbures (SNH) and its partner, Gaz de France (GDF-Suez).

With an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas, the floating unit will help anticipate the production of liquefied natural gas in Cameroon as early as 2017, pending the completion of the construction of a factory project for SNH and GDF-Suez.

Sources close to the firm reveal that this production of liquefied natural gas will be combined with the production of domestic gas for about 30,000 metric tonnes per year.

This will bring the national production to 45,000 tonnes, since the production of the National Refinery Company (SONARA) currently stands at 15,000 tonnes, while the demand is about 80,000 metric tonnes, according to the Caisse de stabilisation des prix des hydrocarbures (CSPH).
