Eneo and Alucam team up to reduce electricity crisis

The Aluminium company of Cameroon (Alucam), which consumes over 40% of the electricity produced in the country, has agreed to reduce consumption at peak (which is a reason of a decline in production) to mitigate the effects of the crisis in electricity generation.

Joel Nana Kontchou, CEO of Eneo, the concessionaire of the public electricity service announced this in Douala, June 4, 2015.

While thanking Alucam for its gesture of solidarity against other electricity consumers in Cameroon, the CEO of Eneo reiterated that the power cuts experienced by businesses and households for several weeks are the consequence of an unprecedented water crisis.

He explained that this occurrence is manifested by a substantial drop in water levels in dams in the country.

Ahmadou Bivoung, the director of the hydroelectric plant of Edea which adjoins the eponymous dam, reveals that the flow of water in the area of the Sanaga at Edea was 615 m3 / s on 1 June 2015 against 1,398 m3 / s on 1 June 2014, a decrease of over 50%. "In 23 years of service, I have never experienced this phenomenon," blaming "this extraordinary event" on "climate change”. He added.

According to the director of the hydroelectric plant of Edea, there is massive rainfall in the cities of Yaounde and Douala, where Eneo concentrates the largest number of subscribers, have no impact on the current water crisis.

He explained the Sanaga river on which are built the central Edéa (276 MW) and Songloulou (384 MW), have their source in the Adamawa region (usually presented as the water tower of Cameroon), where there is no massive rainfall.

This has led to a substantial drop in production of electricity by central Edea and Songloulou, from which is supplied with the interconnected Southern Cameroon network.

Officially, the company Eneo is the current production shortfall between 80 and 100 MW per day, despite the contributions of all thermal power plants and fuel gas in the country.
