Electricty transmission company created in Cameroon

The National Electricity Transmission Company (SONATREL) was created at the end of a decree signed by the president of Cameroon Paul Biya.

As a state Company, it will have as its main mission the transmission of electrical power and the management of the transmission network, on behalf of the State.

SONATREL will be especially dedicated to the operation, maintenance and development of the public network transmission of electrical energy and its interconnections with other systems, managing the flow of electrical energy passing through the public transmission network, planning, the conduct of studies and the management of infrastructures and electrical works as well as searching and managing related funding.

The project of establishment of a company of this type was mentioned over a decade now in Cameroon and the liberalisation of the sector.

According to the current schema, apart from SONATREL, the sector for infrastructure construction will be the domain of Electricity Development Corporation (State) whereas the production and marketing goes to the British investment fund Actis with its subsidiary Energy of Cameroon (ENEO).
