Cameroon ranked 18th most competitive economy in Africa

Cameroon has been ranked the 18th most competitive country in Africa on a list of 38 countries of the continent in the fifth edition of the report on the competitiveness of Africa.

The study was published on 04 June 2015 and launched in Cape Town, South Africa from 02 to 05 June at the World Economic Forum for Africa.

The classification presented in the 2014-2015 report on the competitiveness of Africa, published this year on the theme 'transforming African economies', is based on data from the Forum, best known as the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI).

According to the index which considered the performance of 144 countries this year, Cameroon retrogressed in the ranking on the world map to 116th in 2015. It lost a place compared to the 2013 - 2014 GCI where it had the 115th place and four places from the ICM in 2012 - 2013 where it was 112th out of 144 countries.

Cameroon's economy is based, according to the authors of the report, on the services (49.3%), industry (31%) and agriculture (19.7%). In Africa, Cameroon comes ahead of countries like Nigeria (27th in Africa and 127th in the GCI), Egypt (20 in Africa and 119th in the GCI) or even Angola (35th in Africa and 140th in the GCI).

The top five African countries in the global competitiveness index 2014-2015:

(2) South Africa (56th)

(3) Rwanda (62nd)

(4) Morocco (72nd)

(5) Botswana (74nd)
