Cameroon, Congo define terms for construction of Chollet dam

Cameroon and Congo signed the memorandum of understanding on the Organization and functioning of the inter-State steering Committee for the construction of the hydroelectric power station of Chollet.

The Cameroonian Minister of water and energy Basile Atangana Kouna and his Congolese counterpart of energy and hydraulics Henri Ossébi were the respective representatives of their State upon signature of this Protocol.

Under the terms of this agreement, the headquarters of the Intergovernmental Committee will be located in Brazzaville. The Director-general of the Organization will be designated by Cameroon and his Deputy by the Congo.

The work of the construction of the dam will start in November 2018, even though both parties think it can begin earlier.

With a capacity of 600 MW, the hydroelectric plant will be built on the Congo River, the River border between the two countries. It will cost between 354 and 670 billion CFA francs development option which will be implemented by its manufacturer, the Chinese company Sinohydro.

The energy produced by the dam will be used to feed Cameroon, Congo, the Central African Republic and Gabon.
