40,000 tonnes of sugar available in stock in Cameroon

Cameroon has 40,000 tonnes of sugar, according to the Trade Minister who met on Monday with the actors in the sector.

The decision to suspend all imports of sugar since August 21 should therefore not cause breakage on the market. According to the explanations made by Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, with a national monthly domestic consumption estimated at 10,000 tonnes, the country has enough to hold up to the next production of sugar, in November 2014.

"When production will be resumed, in November, Sosucam (Cameroon sugar company) will be able to produce a little more than 30,000 tonnes. That will lead us at the end of year with stocks of 40,000 tonnes available. At the national level, we largely have what it takes to meet the needs".

The decision to suspend the import of sugar is officially motivated by the desire to preserve local industry and jobs against the competition.
