Garoua in anticipation of the Ramadan Feast

la Fête du Ramadan la Fête du Ramadan

Markets and Muslim households in Garoua, North Cameroon, have become busy in preparations towards the end of the Ramadan fasting either on Friday or Saturday depending on the appearance of the crescent moon.

The celebration will not only be a prevalent moment of joy for those who observed the Koranic instruction for 30 days but also a time of prayer and meditation.

Garoua, prepares feverishly for it.

Yesterday at the central market in Garoua, the tailoring area was particularly busy. In the workshop of one Abdouraman E, it was the shoving of one another. Five of his colleagues were overwhelmed, particularly, by the demanding customers at a period.

"I have not slept for two days because of customers who harass me at my home," informed the master of the house. Not far away was the same incident at the sewing workshops for women even though activities were calmer.

At loincloths shops, only a few stragglers were visible. It was a busy day for the period of increased purchases of loincloths. The butchers had their tables filled with meat, enough for buyers, in preparation for the holiday. Besides, there were dozens of cattle that will be slaughtered for the occasion.

As for sheep and goats, the less fortunate usually wait until the last day to buy them. However, the most important thing is to have enough food in the house for family and guests.

In order to receive visitors properly on the day of Ramadan; some families have arranged some tables and chairs so each guest will feel comfortable.

Licensed drinking bars are also making more orders from beverage depots. After a month of bad businesses, shop owners are making sure that there is enough stock on that day.
