‘Born-again church' members on dawn preaching spree in Douala

Some members of ‘Born-again’ churches no longer evangelize only in their Chapels. They hang around neighbourhoods to preach with loudspeakers.

The inhabitants of neighbourhoods such as Makepe, Bonamoussadi and Kotto suffer the most from this new development. They no longer get sound sleep because of the noise caused by these nocturnal preachers. They usually start from 1:00 am in the morning until almost 6:00am.

One of the most affected groups are students who get up very early to study as they struggle to concentrate due the noise coming from these preachers. This trend worries residents so much that people are beginning to complain. Some men and women are sometimes forced to come from their homes in Makepe at 4 o'clock to complained directly to these teams.

The preachers seem to already have a well-established program. They are heard, 3 to 4 times a week for hours. "God is the creator of heaven and Earth, have faith in him, observe the ten commandments...".. Tirelessly, they repeat the same themes on a daily basis. The sub-prefect of Douala 5th, outraged by the recurrence of this phenomenon, said that he will be confronting these churches that prevent citizens from getting quality rest after a long day's work.

"We have already closed down almost 5 churches located in the residential area. We will continue to track down those people who disturb inhabitants at night. And we will put a stop to this new phenomenon.
