African swine fever currently threatens 5 regions

After the outbreak which began in September 2014 in the Department of Logone and Chari, in the region of the far North, having the largest pool of hog production in Cameroon with 25% of the national production, African swine fever has spread in five other regions in the country.

Indeed, breeders of the regions of the West, Northwest, Southwest, Central and Littoral, currently face this epidemic that decimated the animals and ruin the efforts of pork producers. However, the damage is not yet alarming, because of the prompt reactions of the veterinary authorities.

According to officials of the Ministry of livestock, fisheries and animal Industries (Minepia), yet claiming to have invested about 4 billion Cfa francs in the promotion of the swine sector since 2005, the reappearance of African swine fever in Cameroon in 2010 is one of the main obstacles to the optimum development of this sector in the country.

As a reminder, the first outbreak of the swine plague in Cameroon, which occurred in 1982, had officially wiped out 80% of the pig population in the country. 'The development of this sector will be more reliably with the creation of semi-intensive and industrial holdings located outside urban areas and controlled access', noted Taiga Minister in charge of livestock.
