The percentage of unvaccinated children reduced from 14 per cent during the 5th vaccination campaign to 9 per cent at the 6th edition.

It was with immeasurable calmness that 12-day old Maurice Deséré Ntonmo on Friday August 1st received two drops of polio vaccine from Ludovic Ngoa, the Secretary General at the Littoral’s Governor’ Office.

The occasion was the launching of the 7th edition of vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis in “Cité des Enseignants” at the Logbaba neighbourhood in Douala.

The 7th edition of the vaccination campaign that came after two wild polio virus cases were discovered in one of the Central African refugee camps in the East Region, ran for three days. The 8th edition will be launched in August to ensure that the wild polio virus is completely eradicated.

During the launching ceremony, Littoral’s Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr. Martin Beas Yamba, enjoined parents to make their children available for the vaccine in order to fight and prevent paralysis.

The previous vaccination campaigns, Dr. Martin said, had proven that communication on the health concern had gone far and wide. “The region has witnessed progressive improvements since the kick-off of the first campaign in January 2014.

According to our statistics, 14 per cent of children between zero and five years were not vaccinated during the 5th edition in May compared to 9 per cent during the 6th edition in June 2014.

The State and its partners including World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), among others, have resolved to stay guard till the epidemic is completely eliminated,” he explained.
