Fake drugs worth 10m FCfa destroyed in Melong district

Fake drugs worth a value of 10 million FCfa were seized and burnt during the operation ‘coup de point’ launched by the Deputy Prefect of the Melong district, Dieudonné Mbenda.

Large quantities of syringes, packets of water for infusion, and different types of tablets were part of the list of medicinal products from the street that Dieudonné Mbenda, who accompanied the security forces, seized in his district a few days ago.

During the descent which took place in the Melong market, the deputy of he Borough of Melong was assisted by the members of the Association for Social Assistance and the Fight Against Injustice (Aasli) to conduct the exercise. He seized the medications, considered harmful to human health, before the sellers could escape with them. Those who attempted to escape were immediately caught and stripped of "these poisons”.

At the end of this operation, which lasted a few hours only, Dieudonné Mbenda and the Aasli also seized a large quantity of drugs from street estimated at approximately 10 million cfa francs.

The wrath of sellers who took care of their families through this activity did not hinder urge of the deputy - prefect, who decided to put an end to this trade.

After sealing the stock, the sub prefect who called upon the inhabitants of his territory to no longer buy drugs from the street, had them burnt a few minutes later.

Realizing the fact that it was the cost of living that pushed people to buy from road side vendors, the Deputy Prefect of Melong urged them to buy drugs from the pharmacy or in community health centers which often have large stocks of drugs subsidized by the Ministry of Public Health.

According to David Doriant Finka, the president of the Association for social assistance and the fight against injustice, the referral and the destruction of street drugs falls within the scope of action of his association since there is a militate for social balance and fight against injustices.

He praised the action of the Deputy Prefect and expressed the wish to see this action continue, so that the phenomenon of street drugs disappears forever.

“Because these drugs are poorly preserved. They are exposed to rain and the sun for months and therefore become harmful to health,” he said.
