Cameroon honored for the fight against filariasis

The Cameroonian Center for Research has just received a Scientific Award from the Islamic Development Bank.

A gala evening for such prize was organized on Friday in Yaoundé. The team of Pr. Joseph Kamgno, Director of the Center for Research on Filariasis and other tropical diseases, which recently received the 2015 Awards for Science and Technology by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), was at the spot light.

This was through a commemorative evening at the Hilton hotel in Yaoundé. The Ministers of Public Health, André Mama Fouda, Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakari, Goodwill Ambassador, Roger Milla, and several personalities from the academic side took part in the ceremony.

The Center for Research on filariasis and other tropical diseases was awarded by the IDB for its remarkable contribution to the socio-economic development of Cameroon.

“It was awarded for work and research on filariasis and other tropical diseases so that solutions are found to eradicate onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. We welcome especially the last finding, namely the rapid test that allows the treatment of patients as soon as it is detected,” said the MOH.

This achievement comes to reinforce the research work of Pr. Joseph Kamgno and his team where some localities in the country, such as Okola, have long suffered from these diseases.

This distinction is, according to the Pr Joseph Kamgno, “the added value of Cameroon. It is the country that has won and I'm happy.”

The prize for Science and Technology of the IDB rewards countries for their contribution to socio-economic development.
