And, certainly, being out and proud is unAfrican, but homosexuality itself has been around forever, and no amount of not wanting it is going to change that. When something is wrong in a culture, I cannot see the wisdom of determinedly holding onto it because it's part of tradition: slavery, too, was part of many African cultures. There are other ways of understanding supposed biblical prohibitions on homosexuality than those traditionally put forward. The sin of Sodom wasn't homosexuality: it was inhospitality. There is a huge difference in my mind between threatened homosexual rape and a loving consensual same gender relationship between consenting adults. Rape should be illegal whether heterosexual or homosexual. The only thing that is unnatural for a totally homosexual person is to be heterosexual. Homosexuality is not chosen: it just is. Homophobia is chosen, however, and - thank The Lord - is completely curable.
