One of basket balls most promising seven foot sporting sueperstars, Joel Hans Embiid quickly became the top NBA favourite in his class for the 2014 draft combining his strength, size and athleticism.

The University of Kansas graduate's shot-blocking ability benefits from his background in men’s volleyball, which was his primary sport in Cameroon. He grew up playing volleyball and soccer and didn't start playing organized basketball until 2011 when he was 17 years old.

Embiid was discovered by Luc Richard Mbah a Moute a professional player with the Minnesota Timberwolves at that time while attending his basketball camps in Cameroon when he was 16 years old.

Embiid attended the Rock School, a Christian academy, in Gainesville, Florida, and was a five-star recruit by Rivals.com. While there, Embiid led the school to its first state championship in school history. Averaged 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocks a game for the Lions his senior season, guiding the state championship team to a 33-4 record.

He committed to Kansas in November 2012.Embiid has been compared to NBA greats such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Tim Duncan. He was named one of the 30 finalists for Naismith College Player of the Year.

On March 11, 2014, ESPN announced that Embiid was expected to miss the Big 12 tournament, and was "unlikely to play the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament" due to a stress fracture in his back.Kansas lost in the third round of the tournament, before Embiid could return.
