Sampdoria boss happy with Eto’o

In his response to criticism levelled against one of his players, Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has defended striker Samuel Eto’o.

The former Cameroon international was critiqued during their 1-1 draw against AC Milan in the Serie A.

The Blucerchiati had taken the lead after the Cameroonian played a beautifully weighted ball through the legs of Philippe Mexes which found Roberto Soriano unmarked in the Rossoneri box.

Speaking to the media after the match, Ferrero said he’s impressed by the four time African footballer of the year and the former Chelsea man is not just an old man.

“I am happy with the performance of the team,” said Ferrero.

“I am also happy with the performance of Eto’o.

“Everyone told me I had signed an old man in January, but his experience allows him to act as a coach on the field.”

The boss also revealed the club’s plans for the new 2016/17 ambitions adding that they’re aiming for the UEFA Champions League football in the coming years.

“We plan to visit Europe by bus or plane,” he added jokingly.

“When I took over Samp I thought I could do well, but I knew nothing about football.

“Now, I think we can go even further. Next year we will aim to qualify for the Champions League.

“We are aiming for the top.”

Sampdoria are currently placed at position six on the Serie A standings just one point behind Napoli in fourth.
