Oyongo agent is critical of the way Red Bulls treated his client in wake of Impact trade

Megastar French soccer agent Nicolas Onissé doesn’t like the way the Red Bulls treated his client, Ambroise Oyongo, over the past month. The Red Bulls dealt the promising Oyongo on Tuesday, sending him to Montreal along with solid midfielder Eric Alexander.

It’s part of the business, the agent said, but he doesn’t like the way things have played out.

Speaking to BigAppleSoccer.com on Tuesday afternoon, Onissé said that he had assurances in December from former sporting director Andy Roxburgh that the young midfielder was a player who “they counted on him.” Now, weeks later under sporting director Ali Curtis and head coach Jesse Marsch, the Red Bulls saw the promising Cameroonian international as expendable.

“For them Ambroise was intransferable (sic), he had to be patient and make another season in New York,” Onissé told BigAppleSoccer.com

“For Europe they would prefer a loan in the Red Bulls network Salzburg or Leipzig if those clubs needed a left back of course.”

A team source said that Oyongo, who has become a regular starter for Cameroon and recently scored his first goal for the national team to salvage a 1-1 draw in the African Cup of Nations, had attracted interest from top team in Belgium, France, Italy and Scotland. Oyongo’s representation turned down those deals for him to stay in New York and continue his development.

On Jan. 9 in one of the first moves by Curtis as sporting director, the Red Bulls made Oyongo’s loan deal permanent, signing him to a contract. Now nearly three weeks later, he has been shipped off to Montreal in a deal that nets the Red Bulls midfielder Felipe Martins and the top allocation spot.
