Eto'o to focus on fitness

Roberto Martinez will be using the international break to get Samuel Eto'o up to full match fitness.

The former Cameroon frontman hit the ground running on Saturday against former side Chelsea, scoring just six minutes after making his debut from the substitutes' bench.

Before the game, there had been question marks over whether Eto'o would be conditioned enough to play any part - his previous match action had been two months earlier at the World Cup in Brazil.

Eto'o announced his retirement from international football last week, leaving him free to work on his sharpness at Finch Farm throughout the next fortnight.

Once the domestic football resumes a week on Saturday at West Bromwich Albion, Everton play seven games within the space of 22 days.

And Martinez wants the striker up to full speed with such an intense schedule on the horizon.

The Toffees manager told evertontv: "That's a real bonus for us, to see Samuel already in such a good moment of form and making such a good introduction into his Everton career.

“He's fitted into the dressing room really well so I am really happy to see him have that big impact and we have to work extremely hard to get him up to speed so he can play 90 minutes in every game."

Aside from his inch-perfect headed goal, Martinez says Evertonians saw in Eto'o's 20-minute cameo what he will bring to the team.

Martinez added: "I thought he played with real experience, real know-how and you could see that every time he got involved in the action there was real meaning behind it.

"He really enjoyed his performance and his experience allows him to control the game well. He guided that ball into the net with real class."
