Samuel Eto’o could join Spurs - Di Marzio

Gianluca Di Marzio says Samuel Eto’o could join Spurs this summer – if Emmanuel Adebayor departs.

The respected Italian transfer specialist says the Cameroonian, probably 33 but maybe much older, wants to remain in Europe after being released by Chelsea.

And it seems we’re interested in the former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan striker, who bagged nine goals (including two against us) in 21 league appearances for the Blues last season.

Spurs and Eto’o have history. In the last few months, both Juande Ramos and Glenn Hoddle have claimed they wanted to sign the striker, then much better than he is now, during their respective spells at the Lane, only to be handed inferior targets by chairman Daniel Levy.

I normally avoid the expression Spursy but finally landing Eto’o this summer would be just that.

He is yesterday’s man who has just been rejected by one of our supposed rivals and would undoubtedly demand massive wages.

There’s no doubt the Cameroon international was once one of the finest strikers in Europe during his heyday but Eto’o is now a rapidly fading star and, judging on last season alone, he is no longer at the level Adebayor is capable of (when he puts his mind to it), making him a very poor choice of replacement should the Togolese leave.

What’s more, it’s hard to imagine the ageing forward working well as a lone forward in Mauricio Pochettino’s preferred pressing system.

When it comes to transfer gossip, Di Marzio is about as accurate as they come but hopefully he is, for once, off the mark on this one.
