Romanian newspaper links Derby County with Justin Mengolo

Cameroon youth international Justin Mengolo could be a target for Derby County.

Derby County have admitted they will look to do business in the January transfer market and recent reports in Romania indicate Justin Mengolo could be a target.

According to Romanian newspaper fanatik.ro, Derby are monitoring the 21-year-old, who has been told he can leave if the club receive a good offer.

The report states: ''[Mengolo] has come into the view of Derby County, the team at the top of the Championship. Club officials have been after the Universitatea Cluj striker for some time and want to sign him up as one for the future.

''Mengolo has a contract with Cluj for two seasons, but has an agreement with Walter Florian, patron of the club, that he can leave the Red Hats in the summer if they get a good offer.''

Earlier in the month, the powerful striker's agent confirmed his client's availability and he was linked to several teams in Russia.

''There is interest in our client,'' the Cameroonian's agent was quoted as saying by Gazeta Sporturilor. ''We cannot say which teams, but we want to stay at Cluj until the summer before we sit down and talk with anyone.''

Steve McClaren's assistant, Paul Simpson, revealed earlier in the week that the East Midlands side were keen to recruit in the January transfer window and with two strikers linked in two days, it would be fair to assume a forward is their highest priority.

In the Romanian Liga 1 this season, the athletic forward has scored three times and provided two assists in 15 appearances. A none too spectacular record, but if he is one for the development side then his current record will carry little importance opposed to overall potential.
