Official: Porto sign Cameroon’s Aboubakar

Cameroon international forward Vincent Aboubakar has moved to FC Porto from Lorient, the Portuguese giants’ official Twitter account confirmed.

The striker was previously linked with Chelsea, Benfica, and most recently Ahmed Elmohamady’s Hull City during the current transfer window.

Aboubakar made 35 league appearances in his only season at Lorient, scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists as he led the Ligue 1 side to an 8th-placed finish under the guidance of manager Christian Gourcuff, who became Algeria’s national team coach last month.

The 22-year old is the fourth African to joins Porto’s ranks this summer, after Guinea-Bissau attacker Sami, Ghana right-back Daniel Opare, and more significantly, Algerian World Cup star Yacine Brahimi.

The initial fee is thought to be €10 million, but the exact number has not been confirmed by the club yet.

The Cameroon international started his career with local club Coton Sport in 2009, but spent only one season with the club before moving to then-Ligue 1 side Valenciennes.

After making 80 appearances over three seasons for the northern club, Aboubakar then made the switch to coastal city Lorient in the summer of 2013 after his contract expired with Valenciennes.

Aboubakar featured in Cameroon’s dismal 2014 World Cup campaign, starting in the 4-0 and 4-1 losses to Croatia and Brazil respectively.

The Indomitable Lions will be looking to put their nightmare showing at Brazil behind them when they start their 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on the 6th of September away to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group D.
