Mayor Esunge promises to develop football in Buea

Innovations to mark 4th Buea Council inter-quarter tourney

Patrick Ekema Esunge, Mayor of the Buea Council says his slogan of “Change has come to Buea” will be highlighted in the organisation of the 4th edition of the Buea Council inter-quarter football tournaments.

Ekema made the remarks at the Town Green Stadium in Buea Town and the CBC Field in Mile 16 during two separate ceremonies on Sunday, July 20, to launch the Buea Council-sponsored inter-quarter football tournament.

“Our vision of change that has come to Buea is now a reality. This 4th edition of the Buea Council football inter-quarter tournament is going to see many changes. There will be a Super Cup Final. This is to make the people of Buea feel the change that has come,” Ekema said.

The mayor went on to add that “We shall have a tournament each in the Bojongo Court Area, Muea Court Area, Bonavada and in Buea Central. The competition in Bonavada will have a cash prize of FCFA 500,000, while the other three will each have a trophy prize of FCFA 1 million.”

Emmanuel Motomby Mbome, 1st deputy Mayor of the Buea Council and Chairman of the Central Organising Committee of the 4th edition of the Buea Council Football Inter-quarter made a technical presentation of the competitions.

According to him, the competitions will end with a Super Cup final at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium. He said, this football finale will be played by the winners of all the four tournaments.

“We expect that all the actors and players will exhibit fair play. He believes this is an opportunity given them to show their talents to the world and they should maximize it. Our sponsors will be paying keen attention to those who will excel. Such players will be encouraged and rewarded,” Motomby promised.

The opening game of the competition at Buea Town pitted Wona Lyonga FC of Buea Town against Fan Club Eto’o FC of Great Soppo. The Buea Town team won by a 2-1 score.

In Muea Court Area, the opening march saw All Stars of Mile 16 beat Okada FC by 4 goals to nil.

“We are very happy with the massive turnout for this tournament. The people have come out in their numbers to appreciate this wonderful initiative of the Buea Council. Mayor Ekema Patrick Esunge decided to keep the youths occupied gainfully and to also help nurture talents. We’re grateful,” Abel Njoh, a Buea resident said.

“The teams this year are really fantastic. The play well and the cheers from the fans make this competition one of the most interesting ones we've witness lately,” another spectator said.

Despite the rains and the foggy weather, the organising committee chairman said they are doing all in their powers to see to it that, the matches are scheduled early enough, so that visibility problems do not pose as a challenge to the players.

He promised that the mistakes of last year have been addressed and they have controlled the crowd to avoid any brutalities against the players and fans.
