Liverpool hero urges Rodgers to avoid Eto'o target

Jan Molby has urged Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to avoid Samuel Eto’o this summer.

The Reds have been linked with a shock move for the out of contract Cameroonian over the course of the past week, with the club rumoured to be looking to get cover in for Daniel Sturridge.

Although Wilfried Bony appears to be their top target, Eto’o presents a cost-effective alternative, with the African star available for free after being released by Chelsea.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a successful career in which he has won titles in Spain and Italy and lifted the Champions League trophy, but he is thought to be asking for big wages.

Molby feels that Liverpool still need a striker to add to their eight summer signings, but he believes that Eto’o is not the correct option:

“I’d still like to see another striker come to Liverpool before the window shuts. We need more cover for Daniel Sturridge but I wouldn’t be a big fan of taking Samuel Eto’o at this stage of his career.” He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.

“The owners have been strong about the profile of the players the club signs. They need to be a certain age with a re-sale value.

“I said when we qualified for the Champions League that Liverpool may have to make one or two signings that don’t quite fit that profile.

“If the manager believes Eto’o could still do a job at 33 he should be allowed to sign him but I’m hoping Liverpool look elsewhere and sign a better option over the coming weeks.”

Liverpool are light on options up front with Fabio Borini likely to follow Luis Suarez out of Anfield.
