Finke eager to lead Cameroon to Afcon

Volker Finke has insisted that he is eager to stay on as head coach of Cameroon, despite a dismal 2014 World Cup campaign which caught the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The Indomitable Lions' campaign was damaged from the onset with the players going on strike ahead of the World Cup, refusing to board their flight until their bonuses were settled.

It didn't get much better on the field for the West Africans who lost 1-0, 4-0 and 4-1 to Mexico, Croatia and Brazil respectively.

The defeat to Croatia in particular is one the West Africans will be eager to erase from their memory; ill-discipline overshadowed the loss with Alexandre Song becoming the seventh Cameroonian to be sent off at the World Cup finals, while fullback Benoit Assou-Ekotto completely lost his marbles in a now well documented headbutt on teammate Benjamin Moukandjo.

Despite the embarrassing showing in Brazil, Finke is keen on remaining as head coach and the 66-year-old has now turned his attention to the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

"I have my contract and I am doing my job. Those are the essential things," said Finke.

"Cameroon have missed the last two Nations Cups. We qualified for the World Cup and now we are disappointed because we were unable to win a match.

"It doesn't feel good, but now we need to focus on qualifying for Morocco in 2015."

Finke has a year remaining on his contract. The 2015 Afcon qualifiers start in September.
