Everton boss says Eto'o has a 'point to prove'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed the reason he decided to sign former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o.

Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o signed for the Blues on a two-year deal following his release from Chelsea on a free transfer and the Everton manager believes his signing will improve the Toffees with his ‘hunger’.

“I met him and we had a very good chat about football in general and I was impressed about the hunger he still has,” explained the Spanish coach.

“For someone who has achieved nearly everything, he still has the desire he had at 15 when he went to Spain and showed what he could do. For many reasons he has got a point to prove. “

The 33-year-old was criticised in recent months by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho but he comes in to join another Chelsea forward in Romelu Lukaku who will likely be his main competition for his position up front at Goodison Park.

“We are very excited and I think Everton is the perfect home for him. The fans will make him ready and feel sharp but we have got to be a bit patient with the fitness levels and make sure he is back to his best,” Martinez added.

In his career, Samuel Eto’o has won three La Liga titles in Spain and the Champions League title twice with Barcelona as well as the Serie A title and another Champions League title with Inter Milan.

At international level, he has won two titles at the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon and an Olympic Gold Medal.
