'Don't ever come back' - Spurs fans react to Assou-Ekotto head butt

Tottenham Hotspur left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto let his frustrations boil over when he head butted his own teammate as Cameroon lost to Croatia.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto hasn’t done himself any favours if he’s trying to impress new Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The 30-year-old left-back lashed out, head butting teammate Benjamin Moukandjo as Cameroon lost 4-0 to Croatia in a game which also saw former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song sent off.

Assou-Ekotto has been in limbo in terms of his Tottenham career, spending last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers as QPR fought their way back into the Premier League via the lottery of the play-offs.

One of the areas Spurs need to improve this summer is left-back, with Pochettino crying out for a player in that position as Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United go about deals to sign players in that exact role.

Pochettino may want to take the approach of waiting until after the World Cup to assess the strength of Tottenham’s squad before pushing on with transfers.

Assou-Ekotto had a great opportunity to use the World Cup as an excuse to show the new Tottenham boss why he deserved to be playing in that position next season.

He could be competitive in the pecking order at Tottenham to start at left-back but Pochettino is unlikely to be impressed by the way Assou-Ekotto let his temper boil over, especially towards his own teammates.

It didn’t just stop with the head butt as he let his frustrations continue to affect his emotions after the game as the players headed for the tunnel, with more than one Cameroon player having to restrain the Tottenham star.

Cameroon are out of the World Cup and Assou-Ekotto will soon be faced with having to address his Tottenham future. Whether Pochettino turns his thumb upwards instead of down remains to be seen but the Argentine won’t be impressed by the images from last night.

Here’s what Tottenham fans made of the incident on Twitter.
