Could Sunderland swoop for Eto'o?

AS Roma continue to ponder a move for Samuel Eto'o, there are rumours that Sunderland could step in with a sensational swoop.

Roma remain unsure whether or not to sign Samuel Eto'o and the latest reports in Italy suggest that Sunderland could take advantage and step in with a contract. Eto'o wasn't offered a new deal at Chelsea at the end of last season after falling out with boss Jose Mourinho and the experienced striker has been forced to find a new club.

Having returned from an unsuccessful World Cup with Cameroon, Eto'o is now looking to work out his club future, but things aren't progressing quickly.

It has been widely reported that Eto'o wants to stay in Europe and would welcome a move to Roma, who are looking to add a proven striker to their ranks.

However, the capital club have focussed their attention elsewhere and after securing a deal for Ashley Cole, they are now mostly concerned about trying to keep unsettled defender Mehdi Benatia.

Pedullà states that Sunderland and another possible suitor, Galatasaray, have been asked to wait while Eto'o evaluates his options because his ideal option would be Roma.

Roma director Mauro Baldissoni has refused to comment on the Eto'o situation, but one way or the other the Giallorossi will have to make a decision soon.
