AWC: Cameroon maintain winning momentum

Striker Deborah Enganamouit scored in either half to send Cameroon closer to the last four to beat Algeria 2-0 in their Group B clash on Wednesday at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.

The Cameroonians went straight into attack from the onset and by the fourth minute mark, Enganamouit who plays for Swedish side, Eskilstuna, saw her header miss narrowly.

She kept the Algerian backline on their toes and deservingly shot her side into the lead on 16 minutes with a solo effort, a long range shot that caught Algerian goalie Kahina Takenint off guard.

‘Les Fennecs Dames’ were unusual compared to their output against Ghanaian and key player, Naima Bouhani was outplayed by the Cameroonians. The central pair of captain Cathy Bou and Christine Manie gave Bouhani, the author of their opening win against Ghana, no breathing space.

Bouhani was kept at bay and the pair ensured that all the supplies never got to her.

The only best chance of the Algerians was three minutes from time, but Bouhani headed wide from close range.

Cameroon resumed with the same tempo and in the opening minutes Takenint was forced to palm out Gabrielle Aboudi’s free-kick.

On 61 minutes, ‘Les Lionnes’ doubled the lead through Enganamouit from the spot after an Algerian defender handled in the vital area.

As the Algerians began to warm themselves, they were dealt a major blow seven minutes from time as defender Fethia Bekhedda was sent off for a second yellow card.

Cameroon has six points and are in pole position to reach the last four whilst Algeria has three.

Ghana and South Africa, both pointless clash in the group’s other match later at the same venue.
