AS Monaco entered the race to sign Samuel Eto’o

AS Monaco have reportedly entered the race to sign free agent Samuel Eto’o, with the Cameroonian all set to move to the highest bidder this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur could go head to head with AS Monaco for Samuel Eto’o after the principality club reportedly entered the race to sign the Cameroonian, who is available on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old had been thought to be keen on remaining in London following his short spell with Chelsea last term but has already opted against a move to West Ham after the Irons failed to match the African’s wage demands.

Spurs are also thought to be keen on recruiting the experienced forward, who has won Champions League titles with both Barcelona and Inter Milan, but the north Londoners have yet to publicly declare their interest in the striker.

That has reportedly cleared the way for AS Monaco to launch a bid, with the website Fichajes.com reporting that the Ligue 1 side have contacted the player about a move across the channel.

Any transfer to the principality club could hinge on the future of Radamel Falcao, however, with the Colombian thought to be close to agreeing a move to Real Madrid.

Tottenham, meanwhile, could also re-enter the fray, depending on whether rumours of interest in forwards like AS Roma’s Mattia Destro transform into a concrete bid.

Napoli are also thought to be admirers of Eto’o, with Rafa Benitez eager to bolster his attacking line-up ahead of another assault on the Serie A title.

Spurs own plans could also depend on whether the club decides to offload Roberto Soldado, with the Spaniard previously linked with a move to Inter Milan.

That deal appears to be all but dead after the Nerazzurri completed a move for Southampton’s Pablo Osvaldo.

In the meantime, Spurs are facing the distinct possibility of entering a bidding war with AS Monaco for Eto’o with the billionaire-backed French club likely to come out on top.

Move quickly, however, and Tottenham could tie up a deal for Eto’o before the principality side have even had time to blink.
