Students cautioned to protect heritage

The Vice-Chancellor, VC, of the University of Buea, UB, Dr. Nalova Lyonga, has cautioned newly matriculated students of the University to be protective of what they have inherited, especially infrastructure which was built for the purpose of acquiring knowledge.

“My dear students, UB is beautiful, good for studies, but you must remember to protect your heritage. Don’t destroy the infrastructure which Government has spent so much money to erect. We know we have limited amphitheatres for studies, but admitted so many of you because we want you to study. Be disciplined, so that you can be successful at the end,” Nalova advised.

She was speaking during the oath taking ceremony at the Herbert Nganjo Endeley Amphitheatre on November 1.

According to the statistic obtained, a total of 7272 applicants were admitted in the first list. Out of this number, 6,687 were admitted into 39 programmes in four faculties excluding the Faculty of Medical Sciences that is still to publish its list.

In an academic discourse titled Human Ethics, Cardinal Christian Tumi, stressed on the moral behaviour of man, which he said, is not influenced by religion, but by normal principles of character. To him, moral conscience is that which tells you what is good and should be done or what is evil and should be avoided. “Every man is born with a moral conscience, Tumi stated.” The Bishop Emeritus of Douala chastised lesbianism and homosexuality.

“Lesbianism and homosexuality are not only an ethical fault, but a crime against humanity. You must practice what is good habitually not once in a while, because the devil can practice what is good once in a while,” Tumi remarked.

Talking to some freshmen, majority of them expressed satisfaction for having been chosen from a broad spectrum of applicants.

To Davy Nkengey, a new student in the Faculty of Health Sciences, UB is truly a place to be as many call it. “I am happy to have been admitted into this prestigious University even though my campus is at Bomaka.

According to another freshman, Moli Monene Elangwe, listening to the VC and Cardinal Tumi on aspects of discipline and human ethics was a great source of inspiration to him. “I heard that my department is very tough but those words of encouragement have remained in my subconscious mind and by Gods grace, I will make it.”

The event was attended by the Secretary General at the Southwest Governor’s Office, Clement Fondikum, the Mayor of Buea, the 1st Assistant SDO for Fako and the DO of Buea amongst other personalities.

An ecumenical service was conducted by Rev.Fr Thomas, Rev. Pastor James Ebot Ayuk, Rev. Dr Joeys Motomby and Imam Mohammed Aboubakar who all invited God to watch over the institution.

The event was spiced by the UB Choir, the Theatre Ats crew which presented a play on Ebola.
