Ship captain awards scholarship to own village students

Eighteen students who succeeded in this year’s Advanced Level and Baccalaureate examinations in Binju quarter in Nkambe of Donga-Mantung were recently happy recipients of the maiden edition of Captain Edward Chuyeh Mbunkur’s Scholarship Award.

This was in fulfillment of the promise of the award to students, who had registered these examinations sometimes in February, 2014 and was held under the auspices of the Divisional Officer for Nkambe, Abah Abduraman, witnessed by the Divisional Delegate of Secondary Education and the Mayor for Nkambe, Paul Ngabir Bantar. Captain Edward Chuyeh Mbunkur is a long serving officer with the Cameroon Shipping authority in Douala.

On behalf of the Nkambe Elite Association, Issac Gwei Nchindap heartily appreciated the gesture by one of them, Capt. Edward Chuyeh as worth emulating.

He said Capt. Chuyeh by his nature cherished nothing else but development; “He sees possibilities where the rest of us see need; he sees opportunities where the rest of us see problems; he never says ‘let somebody do it’; he says ‘I will do it.’ He has left landmarks all around us,” he described the Captain.

To the laureates, Gwei Nchindap told them the donor was placing a legacy that belongs to them and their immediate community. He prayed the students to be the true ambassadors of Binju and entreated the parents to continue to show love and concern to their children. To the Mayor, Paul Ngabi, “take advantage and exploit that largess”.

On behalf of Capt. Edward Mbaunkur, Florence Nsom Ndombo said the donor had always been worried about the development of his Binju people and would love it to be developed like elsewhere he had been.

She said, the donor believed education is the bedrock of development and insisted that he was no politician but a technocrat. This was contradicted by the bare fact that he was part of the CPDM campaign train and after their victory in the Council; he threw a sumptuous party at his residence dubbed “Thank You” come together where he appreciated the people for voting the party he asked them to vote.

Nevertheless, the donor called on Binju youths to shun all forms of criminality and look for ways of survival. He announced that his gesture was with the assistance of some trustworthy friends like Stephen Konang and Eric Tata who work with the Shipping Company and a building construction Company in Douala respectively. So, he stressed that they were celebrating enthusiasm, commitment and sheer hard work which the laureates demonstrated.

On his part, the D.O for Nkambe Central, Abah Abduraman said he was so proud with the gesture and their massive attendance to appreciate it. He said they were celebrating goodwill and education orchestrated by someone who knows the value of education in a community.

He called on traditional and religious authorities to continue to pray for such people so that they can continue to support the community and challenged other elite to emulate.

While calling on the laureates to show appreciation by excelling wherever they go, so that some day they too should be giving awards to others, he warned the parents to ensure proper use of the FCFA 50,000 each, else they would be charged of embezzlement.
