Ntamulung fire raze student’s apartment

Fire has completely consumed a 6 room apartment building at the Ntamuliung neighbourhood early morning Saturday March 7, 2015 causing huge material loss. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

It took the intervention of some neighbours and the Army Rescue unit to stop the fire from spreading into close by buildings. Most of the residents were students in various secondary schools around Bamenda.

Damien, one of the victim and an Uppersixth student of St Federick preparing to sit for the GCE A/L stood in front of the building in utter dismal as every book, exercise and text book were burnt to ashes in the fire. “I am finished” he cried in pidgin English.

Neighbours had to spend several minutes fanning others who collapsed upon arriving their apartment this morning.

The fire according to a close neighbour to the building started around 1 am but finally got out of control by 3 am. Shouts of fire woke up the entire quarter who rushed to the scene with buckets of water and sand in an attempt o put out the fire which was by this time raging out of control. It finally took the intervention of the army Rescue Unit who arrived the scene around 4 am to finally put out the fire.

No human loss of life was recorded but the material damage to the students which also included their certificates, dresses, electronic gadgets, shoes, kitchen utensils, receipts and books is unthinkable.

Though the exact cause is yet to be determined, some neighbours ar blaming an electric short circuit due to the constant on and off power supply in Ntamulung while others say it may have been caused by a kerosene lamp or cooking stove left unattended to.
