More buses for commuters in Douala

Dr Fritz Ntone Ntone Government Delegate to the Douala City Council presented buses to the Senior Divisional Officer for Wouri.

Since the ban of the intra-urban commercial vehicle, fondly called “cargos”, close to three (3) million commuters have had to go through a hectic time travelling short and long distances in Douala.

It is for this reason that the Douala City Council in its capacity as a Board Member of an intra-urban transport company decided to address this transport problem for residents by acquiring new buses for the company called Société Camerounaise de Transport Urbain, SOCATUR as part of state subvention.

According to Dr Fritz Ntone Ntone, the City Council’s contribution via the acquisition of the buses is part of a three-year programme with an allocation of FCFA 450 million.

During the inaugural ceremony, he revealed that within this three-year time frame, SOCATUR will acquire between 300 and 500 buses including 19-seater, 35-seater and giant buses to convey residents.

On his part, the Director General of the company who doubles as the Vice President of SOCATUR’s Board of Directors, Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe, assured commuters that, apart from the fact that the air-conditioned buses are new and comfortable, the fare per passenger will not be increased.
