Management of Insurable risks held in Douala

The first Central African Forum on the Wholesome Management and Mastery of Insurable Risks was recently held in Akwa, Douala.

Ludovic Etienne Ngbwa, the Secretary General in the Littoral Governor’s Office, opened the three-day forum in the presence of Protais Ayangma, President of the local business cartel, Entreprises du Cameroun, ECam, and Jean-Paul Fort, a France-based risk management expert.

Organised by the Insurance and Risks Services Consulting, the forum dubbed ‘Afrisques,’ was intended to upgrade knowledge on better management of risks.

Participants came from the industrial, commercial, public and private sectors, as well as local government authorities. Jean-Paul Fort said managing risks in the past entailed offering sacrifices to gods. But today, it has been realised that if risks are analysed, identified and their probability assessed, it becomes easier to handle them.

“If you start a prevention programme, which is re-doing the probability of risks and set up protection mechanisms, the impact of risks will be minimal when they occur. In order to reduce their probability of occurrence, you need to sensitise and train people,” Jean-Paul Fort explained.

Some of the topics treated at the training were technological and industrial risks. Participants were debriefed on the methodology of identifying, analysing, quantifying and treating risks so that they do not occur again.
