Igbo Community in Cameroon launches FCFA 110m project

The Igbo Community in Cameroon has launched an FCFA110 million project aimed at constructing a school and a Civic Cultural Centre in Limbe.

The Igbos converged in Limbe recently to kick-start the multi-million project with a fund raising.

His Majesty, Jonathan Thomas OnyenguboEze, leader of the Igbo Community in Cameroon, opened the fundraising with an FCFA 500,000. The Vice President of the Igbo Community in Limbe, Dr. John Ndukwe and his friends, also launched with FCFA 500,000.

Talking about the project, the President of the Igbo Community in Limbe, Anthony EkeoguNwafor, said they are aiming at building a school and civic centre, which shall be used to teach the Igbo language in Cameroon.

“We envisage a time in the future when our children will take lessons in the Igbo vernacular, so that, the Igbo language does not become extinct in Cameroon, because our language is our identity and the beacon of our culture.”

Dr.Ndukwe, on his part, said the centre shall not only be restricted to Igbos, but to every member of the public and “even those who want to take lessons in the Igbo language.” He added that the centre shall be open to the public to hire for events.

The Limbe gathering also witnessed the launching of the Igbo Community (Oha-na-ezendigbo) in Limbe.

According to the President, it has been a long struggle for the Igbos to come under one umbrella. He said the union of the Igbos was aimed at fostering peace and development; promote the education of their children and encourage their members to be law-abiding and enforce the spirit of hard work among them.

The First Assistant SDO for Fako, Vincent Nafongo, who presided at the launch, said it was a laudable initiative.

“I think the initiative is laudable because it is aimed at bringing the Igbos together in Limbe, Fako and Cameroon.”

Speaking on behalf of the Chiefs of Limbe, Chief Samuel Ekum commended the Igbos for coming up with such a project.

“They are building a Cultural Centre here in Limbe and I think we should support them,” Chief Ekum said.

Dr.Ndukwe, de son côté, a déclaré que le centre doit non seulement être limitée à Ibos, mais à tous les membres du public et «Même ceux qui veulent prendre des cours dans la langue Igbo." Il a ajouté que le centre sera ouvert au public à la location pour des événements.

Le rassemblement Limbe a également assisté au lancement de la Communauté Igbo (Oha-na- ezendigbo) à Limbe. Selon le président, il a été une longue lutte pour les Igbos à venir sous un parapluie. Il a dit l'union des Igbos visait à promouvoir la paix et le développement; promouvoir l'éducation de leurs enfants et encourager leurs membres à respecter la loi et de faire respecter l'esprit de travail acharné d'entre eux.

Le premier assistant SDO pour Fako, Vincent Nafongo, qui a présidé le lancement, a déclaré qu'il était louable initiative. "Je pense que l'initiative est louable, car il vise à amener les Igbos ensemble dans Limbe, Fako et le Cameroun." Se exprimant au nom des chefs de Limbe, chef Samuel Ekum félicité le Igbos pour venir avec un tel projet.

"Ils sont en train de construire un centre culturel ici à Limbe et je pense que nous devrions les soutenir", a déclaré le chef Ekum.
