Experts rethink global maritime distress and safety system

A seminar to brainstorm on maritime distress and safety systems is underway at Mont Febe hotel in Yaounde.

The opening ceremony of the three-day seminar was presided by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications Jean Pierre Biyiti Bi Essam.

The sitting shall delve on ways of developing strategies for the National Component for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of rising maritime security threats in the Gulf of Guinea coupled with the illegal migration through corridors in the North of the continent.

The coordinator of the committee of telecommunication regulatory board, François Kamgam argued, “The Global Maritime Distress System is a system to bring assistance to those who are in difficulty at sea.

“The system is intended to alert search and rescue coordination, locating maritime safety information broadcast” he added.

During the three-day seminar, experts will also dell on the situation of a National Emergency Telecommunications Network and the monitoring at sea as well as the National and International Maritime Regulations. .
