Ekema gets best mayor title

Ekema Patrick Esunge, Mayor of the Buea Council has been voted the Best Mayor of the year 2014 and at the same time initiated into the rank of nobility by Fons of the North West Region.

The dual accolades of distinction were conferred on the Buea Mayor on Saturday, February 28, 2015 in Bamenda during the 12th edition of The Guardian Post Achievement Awards.

The chairman of the awards committee, Peterkins Manyong while handing over the award said Mayor Ekema is an exceptional mayor. “I thank the symbolic mayor of Buea. He is an exceptional mayor. Indeed, President Biya in his end of year message congratulated Mayor Ekema as he has not been misled by propaganda,” he said.

HRH Fon Gwan Mbanyamsig III, Fon of Guzang said Ekema Patirck has washed his hands clean and is fit to dine with elders, “Mayor Ekema is young and dynamic.

Since he assumed office as Buea Mayor, he has fought the 'come-no-go' syndrome and also has waged war against corruption. He has done so much to better the lives of his people and we can only encourage him to do more.”

Fon Fobuzie II of Chomba whom is also Advisor to the North West Fons’ Union (NOWEFU) decorated Mayor Ekema with a red-feathered cap. By this, Mayor Ekema Patrick Esunge has become one of the notables of the North West Region.

His wife who was also clad in the traditional outfit of the North West people was told to always be at the service of royalty and nobility.

“You have served and you’ll continue to serve Cameroon without fear or favour. Ekema will always overcome his challenges. This initiation is the first step to more traditional honours,” Fon Fobuzie said.

HRM F.E.N. Fongwade III, Fon of Nsongwa was part of the delegation of North West Fons that honoured Mayor Ekema. Mayor Ekema has been noted for his open-door policy, his welcoming nature and his inclusiveness.

Why Ekema was voted! Mayor Ekema was voted as Best Mayor in 2014 for demonstrating transparency and collaboration in the management of council affairs. He played a key role in the 50th anniversary celebrations of Cameroon’s Reunification in Buea in February, 2014.

Mayor Ekema’s slogan moved from “continuity” to “Change has come to Buea”. It is with this slogan that he has been keeping vigil with his team to stamp his mark on Buea.

In a brief statement after receiving the award, Mayor Ekema said, “The question is often asked if anything can come out from the younger generation. I say yes. The results are glaring. Go to Buea and live the experience.”

He dedicated the award to staff of the Buea Council, his colleagues for supporting his concept of team spirit and to Prof. Victor Julius Ngoh whom he described as a mentor.
