Douala denizens launch demonstration against Boko Haram

Hundreds of people demonstrated on Sunday in the Cameroon port city, Douala to condemn the actions of Boko Haram Islamist sect which multiply the deadly raids in the North of Cameroon, noted an AFP correspondent.

The protesters, who had also intended to lend their support to the security forces against the Islamists, marched peacefully in the streets of the city, sometimes recieving applause from onlookers.

Some carried placards such as "I am BIR" (rapid intervention battalion, elite unit of the army engaged in fighting), or "I am Kolofata", village in the region of north which has suffered repeated attackes from Boko Haram.

A citizen remarked, "this includes everyone not only the Cameroonians, this concerns the entire world with the problem of terrorism, which is a social, political and economic problem," explained one of the demonstrators, Moïse Taken Enan "so we decided to walk to support our country and the world against terrorism".

On 21st January, a similar demonstration, which was attended by few people took place in Yaounde. For months, Boko Haram has multiplied attacks on civilian and military targets in the far north of Cameroon.

A quarantine of Cameroonian soldiers have already lost their lives in this region. The army says it has killed hundreds of Islamists since the conflict began.
