Douala: Mourner urinates on church door

Violence broke out in Ngangue, Douala, in the morning of December 31, 2015, following a violent physical assault on a Pentecostal church pastor who rebuked a mourner for urinating on the church door. Hordes of neighbours who were awoken by the incident at about 5:30am, quickly rescued the 50-year-plus pastor who had already received several blows and was being smashed to the ground.

Other mourners at a wake keep in a nearby home all rushed to the church, but were soon divided over what action to take. Each of the two opposing camps quickly gained the support of furious Christians of the church and neighbours. Another moment of fighting between the two sides then ensued.

Soon after, the pastor’s sons from a distant neighbourhood stormed the scene and landed a beer bottle on the assailant’s head, maiming him. Four soldiers of the Rapid Intervention Battalion and two gendarmes later intervened, arresting the Man of God and wife and temporarily placing them in custody while the wounded was immediately rushed to a nearby medical clinic for attention.
