Disabled women in Cameroon have expressed their opinion against marginalization during a consultation where they explored possible solutions with local authorities in Yaoundé.

This is to find some possible solutions including access to credit and savings. Some 20 leaders from various associations in Cameroon exchanged ideas on Friday in Yaoundé on the theme: "The barriers affecting productivity and major knowledge of oppressed and depressed women and girls."

This is because women with disabilities continue to face marginalization and stigmatization in many industries to the extent that some are lagging behind.

"There are some positions they refuse to attribute to us because some officials are saying that we cannot take them on. Yet we are capable of many things and have skills which allows us to be independent,” said Maureen Atemkeng Nkoumki, promoter of the Lazarus Group of Hope association in Cameroon.

At this ceremony chaired by Martine Sidonie Eyouck Beyala, Departmental Delegate of Social Affairs, in Mfoundi, disabled women have held a string of grievances. These included the signing of partnerships with local councils to enable them have commercial space for their products.

"In terms of social affairs, we were asked to organize ceremonies like the Miss Cameroon pageantry to enable us develop a good morale and have self-esteem," said Maureen Atemkeng Nkoumki.

"There is an interest to support them, encourage them because they have a role to play in the development of our country. They have a variety of skills and should be valued for the benefit of our country,” said Sidonie Martine Eyouck Beyala.

Assurance was given to them by local authorities to offer them the opportunity to contribute their expertise in the country's economy. The next meeting will be held on August 13 to develop a platform.
