Bordering populations moved far away from the Logone dam

After the rupture of the dam of protection along the Logone river, they are now confined in Begué-Palam while waiting for a providential solution. Under shelters, men, women and children resist to regain the locality of Begue-Palam where the other disaster victims were confined.

During this time, the Logone river continues to pour out overflowing water on the breach of 50 meters Friday afternoon. The few dwellings and other cultures which are on the perimeter of this disaster were invaded by water.

Between the locality of Bégué-Palam and that of Dougui in the district of Kaï-Kaï, the 50 meters long breach surprised the populations this Friday. The dam was degraded and only the bold ones of the Dougui and Houmi villages were stubborn enough to remain there.

The populations of these two localities had been summoned to leave this zone from last year and the place declared uninhabitable. For the moment, the new disaster victims were lodged in classrooms of the college and public school of Begue-Palam.

Alerted, the prefet of the department of Mayo-Danay, in displacement in the South of the country, dispatched very early last Saturday two prefectoral assistants assigning them to evaluate the extent of the disaster and to take measures for the safety of the bordering populations.

Makon Ma Makon and Daniel Eoung invited the populations which occupy the dam to join the place the temporary place for re-housing in the center of Bégué-Palam.

Within the framework of the implementation of the Project of emergency intervention against floods (PULCI) financed by the World Bank with about 54 billion francs CFA, sites were identified for the re-housing of the populations living under the threat of water of the Logone river and the Lake Maga.

To date, the operation is somewhat slowed down by the rains. In the district of Maga, 1 065 batches are already allotted on four sites: Dangdalang, Mahourou, Farahoulou and Gagarey. In the district of Kaï-Kaï, 576 batches were allotted on 1 439 envisaged.

The operation is entirely finished in the district of Yagoua where 73 batches were allotted. The process was stopped in the district of Gobo because of the rains.
