At least one dead in floods in Cameroon

Floods Floods

At least one person died in the floods affecting several localities in Cameroon in recent days, including the regions of the Far North, Littoral and North West where corroborating testimonies indicate extensive damage recorded between Monday and Tuesday.

According to security sources, an eight year old child died as a result of drowning in Bamenda in the North West region. His body was recovered on Tuesday morning by firefighters.

This disappearance has angered the population, including John Fru Ndi, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) party-leader of the parliamentary opposition who accused the authorities of "laxity".

"It is inconceivable that they allowed people to settle on river beds and on the influence of drains, especially when some of the locals waved papers signed either by sub-prefects, mayors or by neighbourhood leaders, allowing them to settle on these sites,” said the opposition leader.

Apart from the death of this child, several houses were damaged, making their former occupants homeless.

In the city of Douala, the abundant precipitation that fell on the city since Sunday have caused widespread flooding, especially as the eviction process of the people living in swamps and on the influence of the drains began last July.

To this end, the French Development Agency (AFD) through debt reduction and development contract (C2D) will release FCFA 109 billion for the water treatment program of the city of Douala.

Another part of the country under the influence of water, it is the region of the Far North, where dikes are at risk of collapse, especially in distance from the Exploitation Company and Yagoua Rice Mechanization (SEMRY).

According to eyewitness accounts, the collapse of the dam caused flooding of several villages within a radius of 20 km.
